Four Facts You Should Know About Facial Plastic Surgery

Facial plastic surgery covers almost every part of the face including the nose, eyelids, chin, ears, neck and even the skin. At present a little over four million Americans opt for facial plastic surgery with surgery on the nose and eyelids taking the top spot as the most usual procedures. Experts say that modern technology and knowledge has made facial plastic surgery a safe procedure. But before you decide to get one yourself, you should know some crucial facts about it.

Fact #1: It is not for everyone.

Some people seem to think that the only key to a successful facial plastic surgery procedure is a good doctor. The fact is that your personal fitness for the procedure also plays a role in ensuring good results. Even the best cosmetic plastic surgeons have to consider your fitness based on age, physical and mental health, skin type and texture and bone structure. This is where picking a good surgeon counts first. During pre consultation, your surgeon has to be able to make a disinterested judgment of your fitness as a facial plastic surgery candidate.

Fact #2: The procedure cannot always give you dramatic physical and social changes.

A good surgeon will always encourage you to have realistic expectations. Part of being realistic is to understand that a facial plastic surgery procedure will not always reinvent you, make you perfect or improve how people relate to you or treat you. This means first of all that facial plastic surgery can only make some improvements and diminish defects but cannot give you a whole new different perfect face. It also means second of all that having your face fixed will not help you change your social status or help solve your relationship issues and problems.

Fact #3: The Procedure has its risks.

Most experts downplay the physical risks as rare and unlikely if you get your face done under capable hands. The risks however are still very much present and may just happen to anyone. You could be open to the risk of infection, bleeding, bad healing, nerve damage and scarring. The last risk in particular is permanent but will differ in degree depending on the procedure and the skill of the surgeon. Incisions that turn to scars are usually creatively hidden or are covered by make-up.

The greatest risk however is the risk of dissatisfaction. Again, you should understand before undergoing facial plastic surgery that the results will not be dramatic.

Fact #4: There are different modes of payment.

Facial plastic surgery costs may have dropped a bit but that does not mean that they are necessarily affordable for everyone. You would be lucky if you could get a loan or an insurance company to cover the procedure but some insurance companies just don’t have policies for it. Some surgeons will also require full payment before the procedure is conducted. This is to ensure that you truly can afford it and that you are sure that you really will push through with the procedure. In other words, this is a way to tell you that you shouldn’t get into it if you can’t afford it.
