The Basic Facts About Breast
Augmentation
It is believed that breast augmentation is one of the most
common forms of cosmetic plastic surgery. The procedure however
may not necessarily be for everyone and carries its own risks
and dangers.
What It Is
Breast augmentation is also known as mammoplasty. It is
considered an advanced medical surgical procedure used to
improve the size and appearance of female breasts. Implants are
inserted in specific areas near the breast to increase bust
size. Since it is a major medical procedure, only an expert and
qualified surgeon can safely conduct it.
Why Women Want It
Breast augmentation is a procedure that has been popularly
used to improve the shape, size and appearance of breasts in
women who feel uncomfortable or discontented with the look or
appearance of their breasts. For some women, breast
augmentation can increase confidence and improve the way they
feel about themselves.
Breast augmentation however is also a procedure that can
help women cope with events or circumstances that have damaged
previously intact breasts. Women who suffer from hereditary or
in born breast abnormalities; size disproportion; damages due
to accidents, illness or surgery can also benefit from breast
augmentation.
Doctor’s Consultation
Before you undergo breast augmentation,
your surgeon will first evaluate your fitness as a candidate.
You should be physically and emotionally fit and should ideally
have fully mature breasts. More importantly however, you should
also have realistic expectations. This means that you may be
able to only improve your breasts’ appearance but not
necessarily get your ideal appearance. Having breast
augmentation will also not ensure that your overall appearance
will considerably improve or that people will start to respect
you better. During your initial consultation, you should
immediately inform your surgeon of your expectations. You
should in turn listen carefully to what your doctor tells you
to expect.
If you pass your surgeon’s assessment as a candidate for
breast augmentation your doctor will next evaluate other
factors that will determine other important breast augmentation
details. Your preferences, anatomy and your doctor’s expert
opinion will all influence how implants are inserted, what
implants are used and where they are inserted.
Basic Procedure
The actual medical description of the procedure may sound a
little complicated. In simple terms though, your surgeon will
make an incision around the areola, on the breast crease, on
the navel or on the armpit. A pocket will then be created in
some part of the breast tissue in which the implant will be
inserted. An implant is usually placed behind the breast tissue
or above the muscles.
After Surgery
You will of course feel some soreness and swelling after
surgery. You will be allowed to move around after 2 days but
you may still be required to wear a special bra for some time.
Some discomfort and pain may still be felt even a little after
a month.
Some risks during and after surgery may also be experienced.
These risks include excessive bleeding, infections, breast
hardening, changes in nipple sensation and implant leaks.
