General Facts on Plastic
Surgery Procedures
There are a lot of plastic surgery procedures available. You
might think that some of these may be good options for you now
if you are not satisfied over some body part. Before anything
else though, you should know the basic facts about plastic
surgery.
Types of Procedure
There are two types of plastic surgery. The first type is
reconstructive surgery. Procedures under this type are used to
correct problems with parts of the body that are a result of
birth defects, extreme accidents or cancer treatment. These
procedures may be intended to help reestablish the function of
a body part or to help restore a normal appearance.
The second type is cosmetic surgery. Procedures of this type
are meant to enhance the appearance, shape or contour of a body
part over which a patient may be dissatisfied. In other words,
body parts may look normal or may not be impaired but patients
may still opt to have them improved.
Candidates for Surgery
Not everyone can be a candidate for plastic surgery. A good
surgeon would have to help you find out if you are fit to
undergo a procedure. Assessment would typically involve looking
into your medical history and what you want to happen after
surgery. Good candidates are generally healthy and have no
severe underlying medical conditions. Ideal candidates should
also have realistic expectations. This is especially true for
people wanting to undergo cosmetic plastic surgery
procedures.
You may not be a fit candidate if you have very high
expectations. Cosmetic procedures are meant only to enhance but
not dramatically change one’s appearance. Surgeons may also
think twice about putting you under the knife if you are
mentally unsound, deeply depressed or extremely obsessed over a
body part.
Risks Involved
The risks involved vary for every procedure. Non or less
invasive procedures like liposuction and laser treatment may
only lead to normal general side effects such as swelling and
bruising. More invasive procedures however may have more
serious risks involved. Some general complications that could
arise from various procedures include infection, organ
puncture, uncontrolled bleeding, severe scarring, irregular
appearance and fluid accumulation.
Choosing a Surgeon
The best way to reduce the risks is to get a good surgeon.
This is easier said than done. Even Hollywood stars end up with
the wrong surgeons sometimes. You should at least make sure
that your surgeon is board certified and is professionally
affiliated. He should have a good track record and a commitment
to continuing education in his field. You could start with your
search by asking friends and relatives to give a couple of
recommendations.
Costs of Surgery
Plastic surgery is not cheap. You should expect to have to
spend nothing below a few thousand dollars. Costs typically
vary though. Some factors that may affect cost include surgeon
experience, type of procedure, region where you are, facilities
or equipment used and time required for the procedure.
Take note that not all plastic surgery procedures are
covered by insurance policies. This is especially true for
cosmetic procedures. You should be prepared to spend for a
cosmetic procedure from your own pocket.
